Peterhof: Grand Palace and Fountain Park Tour
Monday, last Tuesday of month
Being found at the very beginning of the 18th century by the Russian emperor Peter the Great not far away from the northern capital - Saint-Petersburg, Peterhof was meant to become one of the greatest summer residences. The building process was completed as quick as possible. On the august of 1723 the ceremony of the official opening of Peterhof took place, by that time the the Sea channel and the Lower Park were already planned, and most of the fountains were functioning and such palaces like "Monplaisir" and "Marli" were built. The main idea of Peter the Great was, from one hand, to make Peterhof the best summer residence of Europe, and from the other to become the triumphal representation of the victory in the Northern War. All these ideas came into reality and by the 1720s the Upper Garden and the Lower Park were finished, the largest system of fountains and water channels was developed, and most of the sculptures were standing around the park.
