Overview

The Tretyakov Gallery was founded by a Russian merchant Pavel Tretyakov. In 1892 he donated his art collection of approximately 2000 works to Moscow city. Nowadays the State Tretyakov Gallery is a huge museum complex and one the largest museums of Russian art in the world. The main museum building on Lavrushinsky Lane houses a unique collection of more than 170 000 works by Russian artists from early religious paintings to modern art, ranging from Theotokos of Vladimir and Andrei Rublev's Trinity to the monumental Composition VII by Wassily Kandinsky and the Black Square by Kazimir Malevich. Its masterpieces include famous paintings by I.Repin, V.Surikov, I.Kramskoy,  I.Shishkin, I.Levitan, V.Vasnetsov, K.Bryullov, A.Ivanov, by M.Vrubel and many others.

In 1985, the Tretyakov Gallery was administratively merged with a gallery of contemporary art, housed in a large modern building at Krymsky Val. And nowadays the Gallery’s building at Krymsky Val houses the only permanent exhibition of 20th century Russian art in the country. It displays works by Russian masters famous all over the world, such as K.Malevich, M.Chagall, V.Kandinsky,  P.Filonov and others.
