Pskov is a capital of the Pskov region, located on the Velikaya River. Known in antiquity as Pleskov, it became (903) an outpost of Novgorod. Its large-scale stone construction, almost equal in extent to that of Novgorod, shows that it was already a rich town in the 12th century.

You'll visit the historic core of Pskov. There is an inner walled city, containing a Kremlin (12th-16th cent.), with towers in the Byzantine style, a cathedral, and numerous medieval churches and monasteries. Later you'll move to Izborsk, a rural locality (village) in Pechorsky District of Pskov Oblast. There is one of the most ancient and impressive fortresses of Western Russia. The village lies thirty kilometers to the west of Pskov. Not far from Izbork, there is famous Pskov-Caves Dormition Monastery which was founded in the mid-15th century, when the first hermits settled in local caves. The first cave Church of the Dormition of the was built in 1473. After the monastery had been destroyed by the Livonian feudals, it was rebuilt by a Pskovian dyak Mikhail Munekhin-Misyur in 1519. Later, in XVI, Pskovo-Pechorsky Monastery became an important outpost for defending the western border of Russia.  In 2003 the monastery marked the 530th anniversary of its existence.
