Pskov

 

Velikiy (Great) Novgorod is one of the most ancient russian cities, a real treasury of national culture and arts. One can't imagine Russian history without Novgorod.

 

Pskov is a capital of the Pskov region, located on the Velikaya River. Its large-scale stone construction, almost equal in extent to that of Novgorod, shows that it was already a rich town in the 12th century.

The area where Vyborg is located used to be a trading center on the Vuoksi River's western branch, which has dried up. The area was inhabited by the Karelians, a Finnish tribe which gradually came under the domination of Novgorod and Sweden. The first castle of Vyborg was founded in 1293 and it was fought over for decades between Sweden and the Republic of Novgorod.

 

Staraya (Old) Ladoga  is a village, located on the Volkhov River near Lake Ladoga, 8 km to the north of the town of Volkhov. The village used to be a prosperous trading outpost in the 8th and 9th centuries. It is one of the oldest towns in Russia, first mention about it dates 862 AC.

Shlisselburg is a town in Leningrad Oblast, Russia, situated at the head of the Neva River on Lake Ladoga, 35 kilometers east of St. Petersburg. From 1944 to 1992, it was known as Petrokrepost. The fortress and the city center are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

 

Kronstadt is a Russian naval port town, located on Kotlin Island, 30 km west of Saint Petersburg near the head of the Gulf of Finland. It is under the administration of the federal city of Saint Petersburg and is also its main port.
