Overview St. Isaac's Cathedral, which weight is 101.5 meters, is not only the largest cathedral in St. Petersburg but also the third largest domed cathedral in the world. The church was ordered by Tsar Alexander I and it took about 40 years to construct the cathedral, from 1818 to 1858. The cathedral strikes by its splendour and greandeur.

The Spilt Blood Cathedral, or the Church of Our Savior on Blood as it is also called, built on the place where Tsar Alexander II was slain was dedicated in his memory. The construction began in 1883 under Alexander III, as a memorial to his father, Alexander II. Work progressed slowly and was finally completed during the reign of Nicholas II in 1907. Architecturally, the Cathedral differs from St. Petersburg's other structures. The city's architecture is predominantly Baroque and Neoclassical, but the Savior on Blood harks back to medieval Russian architecture in the spirit of romantic nationalism. The Church contains over 7500 square metres of mosaics-according to its restorers, more than any other church in the world. It is one of the most beautiful churches in St. Petersburg.
